[ It's later into the day that Ayabe returns to his room, and he's there for much of the rest of the day, seated on top of the bed with the box of bells in front of him, ringing each of them in turn. Incessantly. But nobody shows up.
Maybe Peach, Plum, and Pumpkin have all lost their hearing like Ayabe has by the end of the week. Maybe they're busy with Haruka and can't heed his summons. Maybe they're ignoring him...
[ He would have something to say about that if he could hear Dazai, but he doesn't and so he just scoots over so he's taking up half the bed instead of the full thing and won't get sat on, and continues ringing the bells.
He's not giving up. There's absolutely nothing he can do, but even if it's already too late, he wants to hear(/read from a piece of paper) what happened from the staff. ]
[ At first, he thinks he's stopping so he starts to let out a sigh of relief.
Only for him to continue ringing the bells after he scoots over. Why this? He's just going to try to listen for where the bells are loudest and put his hands over the bells or hands ringing bells. Whatever is easiest to grab for. ]
[ Dazai gets both his hand and the bells, flat over both and Ayabe looks up at him. A hand over his own is a gesture of comfort and that's what he takes it as, unable to hear Dazai's words or read his lips.
At the very least, Ayabe is still able to speak, so he opts for that- simple yes/no questions Dazai can visually respond with. ]
Wow at both these things. Because he can't really see that well. It might be best just to answer yes anyways. After a moment, he'll give a nod before tapping his ear to indicate he heard. ]
[ It's probably Ayabe's notebook since he keeps one with him at all times, but unless Dazai knows to flip towards the end of the book, he'll be writing over words that are already there. It's fine; Ayabe can still parse through them. ]
What scratching noise? Where? I can't hear, so I missed that.
There's no way. Plum wouldn't allow rats in the house.
[ LITTLE DOES HE KNOW but also, he's not the one with sight taken from him, and he would know if there are rats. The creatures are very good at hiding, but there's signs he absolutely wouldn't miss, like droppings or spilled food or corners of things chewed up. ]
[ He's yawning as he comes back in the room and spots Ayabe on the bed already. Kicking off his shoes and just going to leave them in the middle of the floor to be a little spiteful. Then he's going to walk over to the bed and poke him in the face. ]
[ Why do this to him?! Pick up those shoes- Ayabe frowns and swats Dazai's hand away before sitting up, more annoyed about those shoes than anything else, Dazai, please ]
Why am I "Reito" now?
[ Only Luna calls him that, and nobody else has changed habits since he introduced himself week 0 ]
[ He should go up to his placard and sharpie out his first name so nobody else finds out what it is. Those shoes do get picked up and put away, though, before he goes to sit back down on the bed. ]
It wasn't just me. We were just... frustrated, at never being able to do anything to prevent people from getting hurt. Whoever's awake at night has to pass through the stairs, right?
[ asdflkjh there might have been more tape on more steps but instead Ayabe was too busy bullying Jin Ling for us to hammer out anything more solid than that. ]
What does a buddy system help? And the stairs were a large enough area...

We considered that, but between then and the trial, people would have showered and washed off their shoes, gotten rid of that sort of evidence. [ we shouldn't be finding evidence in strip searches??? ]
And... people here shouldn't be lying in the first place. Not when everybody's lives are at stake.

[ He's pausing now and taking a deep breath. There's been a mess of emotions and he hates it. He isn't even sure if he's actually bothered that his room mates weren't in the room or not bothered at all. ]
That's certainly true. There's a lot of might happens or could happens in that scenario.

[ It's almost as if he's testing to see what sounds natural. He's fully expecting to be swatted at or something. ]
Everyone lies or will lie to protect themselves or someone they care about. You've seen it already earlier in the trial.
Reito's fine. Or, better yet, stick with Ayabe like everybody else.
[ He is absolutely swatting Dazai's hand away, and also shifting so that instead of sitting at the edge of the bed, he's more in the center and crosslegged to face Dazai instead of side by side.
It's the more important part of the conversation he hesitates on, because. That sure was a spectacle between Babo Kim and Nie Huaisang and everybody in the know— not necessarily lies, but withheld information, and that's just as bad. ]
People protect people they care about, I know that. I would too. But the stakes are too high this time: if we're wrong, everybody will be in greater danger. That's not protecting anybody.
[ Or when somebody you deeply care about is on the line. For Ayabe, it hasn't been like that- he'd been careful not too get to close to people, and in some aspects he's failing but talks like this makes it easier to take a step back again. ]
